I can't believe it! I am a mother of 3 adults, and my baby just started High School! It's just too surreal.
Ok, on to our main subject - Nicholas! Nick had a fun filled birthday weekend. On Friday, his actual birthday, Michael kidnapped Nick for breakfast. Nick wasn't too excited to get up, but he was glad he did. He enjoyed his yummy breakfast at IHOP. He hung out with Michael during the day, and when Megan got home from her first day of school (post coming), they played an interactive video game called Minecraft.
For dinner, Nick wanted to stay home and requested that mom and dad cook Shrimp Curry Udon. (one of my favorites). And dessert was Fudge Brownie Sundaes. Yummy!
On Saturday, Nick invited friends to play Laser Tag at Laser Voyage Cafe. They also enjoyed the Laser Maze and the Arcade. After a couple of hours there, they came home and played video games in the basement.
What a fun celebration! Now, it's time to prepare for his freshman year at Georgia Tech. It starts in 2 weeks!

Painting project complete!
Finally, after 8 years in this house, we ripped off the wallpaper and painted the bathrooms. Michael was Greg's biggest helper, but Nick and Megan took their turn with a brush as well.
Here are some before and after pictures:

Nick's High Adventure Trip
In June, Nick went on week long High Adventure Trip with the young men from two wards. They spent 2 days white water rafting, they hiked to waterfalls, they played games and they did service as well. On the river, Nick experienced being bucked out of the raft, and this became his favorite part of the trip. Luckily, the rafting company got it on camera! Enjoy!

Greg's Bday
Greg had a super busy yet fun and productive birthday. He started the day with a 6 mile hike with his 11 year old scouts. He came home just soaked with sweat and immediately packed up the car so he and I could go on a kayaking date on Lake Lanier. We loaded a picnic, towels, and supplies into the kayaks and paddled out to a small island off shore where we enjoyed a couple of hours alone. Thunderclouds threatened to cut our time short, but we were able to finish our lunch, explore the island, go swimming, and bask in the sun before the lightening appeared. Then we quickly packed up and booked it back to shore.
While we were gone, Megan decorated the living room with balloons, candles, etc., and Michael and Nick got the master bathroom ready to be painted. They were hoping to have it painted before we got home, but the prep work took longer than anticipated. When we got home, Greg and Megan jumped in to help, and the first coat was completed before dinner.
For dinner, we took Greg to a new restaurant that opened up in Suwanee called Twisted Taco. It was good! They even brought him a really yummy brownie sundae for his birthday dessert!
After dinner, Greg opened presents, played games with the kids and we ended the night watching our new favorite Animal Planet series, "I Shouldn't Be Alive."

Pioneer Trek in the middle of July?
After returning home from EFY, Megan and Nick started preparing for Youth Conference - which, this year, would be a Pioneer Trek.
The stake hosts a Pioneer Trek every four years. Michael, Jeffrey, and Nick participated four years ago, and this year, both Nick and Megan were able to go.
We found the "pioneer style" clothes at thrift stores, and Old Navy carried the long skirts Megan needed. Most of what we bought ended up in the trash because they were covered in muddy red clay and stunk to high heaven. :)
I am still confused why the Stake Youth Committee chose the hottest month (and one of the stormiest) to schedule the trek. But even after the previous trek got stormed out (they had to move the entire group to the closest church building on the 2nd day), they did it again! Megan and Nick started exercising in the heat of the day to build their endurance, and they kicked up their fluid intake days before to make sure they were well hydrated beforehand. I have to admit, with the heat and the storms that were in the forcaste that week, I was one worried mama.
Both Megan and Nick were assigned to a "family." Each family consisted of a Ma, a Pa, and about 8 - 10 siblings. Some families even had a baby (a rice bag in baby clothes). Nick's ma and pa was the bishop of our ward and his wife. Megan's was a couple from our ward as well. The siblings were a mixture of youth from all the wards in the stake.
In spite of the heat, the rain, and the occasional thunderstorms, Nick and Megan had a great time! They enjoyed dancing the Virginia Reel, participating in the Family talent show, listening to and watching reenactments of actual pioneer stories, hearing and bearing testimonies, and bonding with the other "pioneers." Nicholas was asked to bring his ocarina and provide music throughout the trek. They both felt the spirit many times, and Megan was truly touched as she saw and felt a tiny glimpse of what the pioneers went through, especially during the "women's pull" (girls only of each family pulled the handcart up an inclined trail as the boys up at the top sang and cheered them on.)

EFY
Nick and Megan were super lucky to go to EFY this summer. This was Megan's first time, too! And, to make it even more fun, their cousins, Ammon and Selby, flew in from Houston to join them! They had a blast!
Megan and Selby got the coveted 2 bedroom suite and a private bath. Boy, were they spoiled!
Nick's roommate was his buddy from the Roswell Stake, Jacob Harris. Jacob's sister, Nicole, ended up being in Megan and Selby's group. Ammon didn't know his roommate or anyone in his group, but by the end of the week, they were inseparable.
The cousins enjoyed every minute of the week. They didn't even complain about having to get up at 6:30am each morning. The spirit was strong, and they made many new friends. Nick and Megan auditioned for the variety show and made it! Megan accompanied Nick on the ocarina as he played the theme of the Lord of the Rings, "In Dreams." They were excited when they got a standing ovation! (If I can get my hands on a recording, I'll post it.) Megan also participated in the musical fireside. All were not very happy to leave on Saturday morning. They hugged and said their goodbyes very reluctantly. But, they look forward to a repeat experience next summer!
