This year, we decided to forgo our "eat at Golden Corral and go to a movie" tradition, and instead, we went camping! Well, not real camping, more like sissy camping - in a camper with beds, etc. We went to Moccasin Creek State Park (where
Megan went to girl's camp last summer) and stayed for 3 nights.
We left on Wednesday afternoon and
arrived a little after 3pm. Dad was really tense trying to tow that thing on
our Yukon. It fish tailed just ever so slightly the whole way, which made us all car sick. He didn't really ever drive the speed limit. After we set up camp, we built a fire and cooked frozen pizzas! It worked out pretty well! We had smores, too.
Temperatures were in the 60's during the day, and in the upper 30's at night. We were pretty spoiled in the heated
camper.
On Thanksgiving, we drove to Dillard,
GA., to eat at a family style restaurant called "The Dillard House." Greg and I had discovered this place
during our Anniversary getaway this summer. It was "all you can eat" but
everything was served - family style. We left Jazzy in the camper
and drove the 30 minutes to the restaurant only to find out there was a 2 1/2
hour wait. Yep, you read it correctly. That was a first for us. Well,
we decided to drive the 30 minutes back to camp, spend a little time with jazzy,
and drive back. Crazy, huh? But it was so worth it! Yummy, yummy food! Our
favorite dish? The "Acorn Squash Soufflé." We kept asking the server to bring
more, and more, and more. We even liked it better than the pumpkin pie, pecan
pie, and carrot cake! After dinner, I saw a recipe book they were selling of
all their signature recipes. I was so excited to find the recipe for the "Acorn Squash Souffle!" So I decided to take a picture of the recipe so I can try it at home. Greg said I committed "industrial espionage."
On Friday, we hiked a mile to Hemlock
Falls. It was a really pretty hike along the creek bed. We had heard of an
"upper falls" about .7 miles beyond in rough terrain. We decided to try to find
it. But after 45 minutes of serious hiking (no marked trails - and we wished we
had brought a machete), we hit a dead end. There was no where to go except for
in the creek, and it was way too cold for that. So we turned around. It turned
out to be a 3 hour adventure! What a great workout! I looked online after we
got home and found out we were hiking on the wrong side of the creek. Oh well,
maybe we'll try again someday.
We packed up Saturday morning. It
was such a fun trip. We enjoyed flog, working on a puzzle, a few movies, playing
with the fire, geocaching, and just vegging. No emails, no cell phones, it was
heaven. Now to work off the extra 5 pounds............
