50th Anniversary Surprise!

E. Dale and Elizabeth Millet married on October 28th, 1960. They have been married for 50 glorious years. Their six children decided this was an event that needed to be celebrated. On Sunday, July 18th 2010, via a conference call, the planning began. We decided to have a "family only" surprise party during the break between Christmas and New Years. But this would mean a "head fake" on their actual Anniversary in October. Gifts and projects were discussed and finalized. We divided up the tasks among the 6 children. The results were amazing! We couldn't have planned it any better. Here is what happened:

The first suprise: Make a "Happy Anniversary" banner with handprints of all children, spouses, and grandchildren. The banner started in Utah, got mailed to Georgia, then Houston, Dallas, and it's final destination - Lubbock.

2nd Suprise: The following announcement in the Lubbock Avalanche Journal:

"MR. AND MRS. CLUFF

Mr. and Mrs. E. Dale and Elizabeth M. Cluff of Lubbock will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary Thursday. They are the parents of Scott and Mandy Cluff of Hurricane, Utah, Catherine and Bob Sweet of Lubbock, Doug and Sandy Cluff of Flower Mound, Lauralee and Greg Angell of Suwanee, Ga., Paul and Kim Cluff of Spring and Jonathan and Erica Cluff of Lubbock. Cluff and the former Elizabeth Millet married Oct. 28, 1960, at the Salt Lake Temple in Utah. They have 32 grandchildren. Their children and grandchildren celebrate their exemplary lives of true companionship and eternal love."

My parents freaked out when they saw the announcement in the paper. Oh no! Who did this? Now they will be victims of telemarkers, and predators that stalk the elderly! My dad called each of us asking who was responsible. We each just laughed and denied all involvement. :) They soon discovered that instead of the negative response they expected, they received many well wishes and gifts from neighbors and friends. Silly mom and dad! The tricks are from your kids! Sit back and enjoy!

3rd Surprise: Gift - An embroidered wall hanging of the Lubbock, TX Temple was ordered.

4th Surprise: Head Fake - On their actual anniversary, the 2 local children - Catherine and Jonathan - arranged a surprise dinner with close friends at "Las Brisas." Flowers and balloons were added for the final touches.

The plan worked! They were thrilled with the evening and the banner/gift. They wished that all of the children/grandchildren could have been there in person, but they loved that everyone's hand print was on the banner.

Now for the real surprise........

*Just a little background, the Angell's and Doug Cluff's were in Lubbock for Christmas. With Jonathan's and Catherine's families living there locally, that meant only Paul's and Scott's families were missing. Unfortunately, Scott's family was unable to make it.*

5th Surprise: It started on Thursday evening, December 30th. Doug and Sandra asked dad and mom if they would take them on a "behind the scenes" tour of the temple since it was closed for the evening. Dad had taken Greg and I and local family members earlier in the week before Doug's family arrived. So the request was a perfect set up. While they were having "the tour," Paul's family arrived, the grandkids were divided between 3 houses with older grandchildren as babysitters, and the adults dressed up, grabbed their temple recommends/clothes, and drove to the temple. When my parents came out of the temple, they saw us all there dressed up with Paul and Kim. My dad wondered what the heck was going on! We told him we were there to HIJACK the Temple! We came to do a session! It totally caught my dad off guard. Here he was, the temple president, being asked to do something that he has never been asked before! His mind started to race. Did we have all the ordinance workers needed to do a session? Of course we did! Between my parents, and the local siblings/spouses, we had all the temple workers needed. We had that all figured out months before. Was this against the rules? After thinking about it for a while, my dad felt at peace. Words can't express what a profound experience it was to do a temple session with just us - my parents, 5 children and spouses, and one endowed grandchild. It was a "once in a lifetime" event! Unfortunately, we couldn't take pictures that night. It was dark, cold, and raining "mud." Literally! Welcome to West Texas!

6th Surprise: For the morning of New Year's Eve, my dad had "planned" (or at least we let him think he did) to have the "of age" grandchildren do baptisms for the dead. Of course, he had no clue that Paul's family would be there to experience this special event. (Refer to my previous post for pictures.)

7th Surprise: The party! New Year's Eve: Another ruse - The children/spouses plan to take mom and dad to dinner. After the baptisms, I tell mom and dad to relax and take it easy for the afternoon because dinner is taken care of. Meanwhile, the children/spouses/older grandchildren are decorating the gym at the church.

When everything was ready to go, my brother, Doug, and his wife pick up my parents for dinner, telling them the rest of us will meet them there. Doug then proceeds to take my parents on a wild goose chase, driving them all over Lubbock while the rest of us are getting staged for the surprise. Doug brings them to the church and texts us they he has arrived. We turn out the lights in the gym and get our cameras ready. And then the fun begins!

8th Surprise: The memory book. This was my baby. Months before the event, I sent out letters, emails, and facebook messages to my parent's friends (past and present) and family members soliciting letters and pictures for the memory book. Besides confiscating my parent's Christmas card list, my siblings and I had to do some detective work to find key people from my parent's past that we wanted to include in the book. I received over 100 entries via email and snailmail. It was a joy to transcribe, scan, and edit these wonderful tributes to my parents. Each child and grandchild was represented as well. What a treasure! Each child ordered a book for their own.

9th Surprise: The Slide Show. My brother, Paul, collected pictures from each of the siblings and created a slideshow to music. It was about 40 minutes long and spotlighted mom and dad, and each child and their families. Every family received a copy to take home. Another treasure!

Introducing the Show

Enjoying the show!

10th Surprise: We referred to it as the "Replicake." We replicated their wedding cake and had them replay "the cutting of the cake." It was hard to take serious pictures because my mom kept cracking up!

11th Surprise: Musical Numbers. We had a group number and a number with just the Cluff children. The group sang "No Empty Chairs" - written by Orrin Hatch and Janice Kapp Perry -this has always been my dad's motto. He frequently reminds each of his children that he wants no empty chairs in heaven. (Sorry, no pictures because we were all singing!)

Because the "Cluff nose" is infamous for being gigantic, the children decided to perform "Daddy's nose." Enjoy!

12th Surprise: A 500+ piece collage puzzle of each child's family picture:

13th and last Surprise (no, we are not superstitious): Cds of their favorite music. Paul gathered all of their favorites via itunes, etc. Mom and dad enjoyed the music tremendously!

That's it folks! I'll sign off with a few more pictures:

The Group! A job well done!

The Angell Family Service Christmas 2011

This year, we dedicated our Christmas Holiday to service. Presents were sparse, but the fun and joy felt was abundant. I am apologizing now for a lengthy post....

Before Christmas, we started our 1st service by being "Drive-Thru Santas." We started this tradition last year, and quickly realized that it is a blast! We put on our santa hats and wait at a fast food restaurant for someone to pull up in the drive-thru and order. As soon as they do, we cut in front of them and drive up to the pay window. We love the confused looks we get when we tell the attendant that we want to pay for the order that was just made. Then we leave them with a note to give to our "victim" and speed off! It's so much fun!

Here are our "Santa's helpers"

The note we leave behind...

At 2am on Christmas Eve, we drove over 18 hours to spend the Christmas break in Lubbock at my parents' house. Christmas day was celebrated with grandma and grandpa.

(They were "the cripled duo" that day. Gpa with a cane, and Megan wearing her back brace)
Can't wait to look in our stockings!
Even Jazzy got a stocking!

It didn't take long to open our gifts. Besides the fun gifts and money from grandparents, the kids only received a customized photo calendar and stationary from mom and dad. Elder Angell got more than they did! But the fun was only just beginning.....

The Photo Calendars
(Jeff's was already shipped to Argentina)
We enjoyed talking to Elder Angell via skype for a couple hours. We got a webcam tour of his apartment, and met his companion and a member of the ward. A few of us had fun practicing our Spanish, and Elder Cierza and the brother visiting had fun practicing their English.

Service Part 2: Caroling! A few cousins joined us as we brought smiles to the faces of my parent's friends and neighbors. It was freezing cold, but that didn't stop us!

Service Part 3: Ding Dong Ditching - Turkey dinners in a box. At WalMart, we purchased all the ingredients for a couple turkey dinners. We boxed them up, and left them on the porches of our victims. Michael and Nick felt the adrenaline pumping as they hauled the heavy box (that included a frozen turkey) to the doorstep, rang the doorbell, and ran to the car around the corner where the rest of us were anxiously waiting. Afterwards, we enjoyed looking at elaborate Christmas light displays, and spending time at Uncle Jonathan's house.

I don't have pictures of the ding dong ditching, but check out this house!

Here a some highlights from our evening at Jonathan and Erica's:

Service Part 4: The Food Bank As per Lauralee's request, Gpa schedule us to work at the Food Bank! 16 of us showed up for the 4 hour shift. Luckily for us, we were all given the same assignment. Bag Beans! It might sound redundant, but it was a blast! They even treated us to lunch! The 4 hours flew by!

Jonah was the hardest worker there. He ran circles around us......LITERALLY!

Service Part 5: Grandpa's Garden Because of back problems, Grandpa has trouble bending over, lifting, etc. Because of this, he asked the grandkids if they would help him prepare his garden for planting. It was quite a project! They had to clean it all out, spread out the compost/manure, and rototill it all under. You'd think the grandkids would run at this request, but they had a great time throwing around manure ...... until the cockroach infestation. Then only those with strong stomachs finished it up. (You guessed it, the girls disappeared.)

Service Part 6: Temple Service We were fortunate to have a temple at our disposal just few miles away. Greg and I were able to do 2 endowment sessions and the kids performed baptisms for the dead. These were very special events that I will elaborate on in the next post.

200 ordinances were done today!
The Original Cluff Family (minus Scott - we missed you!)
Group Shot

Service Part 7: 50th Anniversary Party - We saved the best and most rewarding for last. To be continued in the next post......

Piano Recital and Musical Number

My Christmas Recital this year spotlighted 30 performers!
My largest group yet! Aren't they a good looking group?

The Program:

My favorite student (and oldest) was the first performer on the program - Greg.
He played "What Child is This." Here is a sample:

Megan played "Hark the Herald Angels Sing."

Nicholas played a musical number in Sacrament Meeting in December. It was an arrangement of "Claire de Lune" and "Silent Night." It was absolutely beautiful!

I wish I had his live performance to share. Enjoy!

Christmas Fun with the Nelsons

The Nelsons invited us over to make cookie trains this year. Last year, we made gingerbread houses. We hope it becomes a yearly tradition! :) Of course, Jared schooled us on how it was done. The girls had more fun with their creative side. As Genevieve put on her blog: "It turned into a somewhat Halloweenish event with Leah making a "train of horrors" (including gingerbread people getting run over by the train), Megan's train involving dynamite and gunpowder, and Nick made a candy smuggling train. Kaitlyn stuck with the Christmas Spirit with her happy train."

I had fun holding Amy - feeding her chocolate and candy canes. Genevieve has officially dubbed me "Grandma Angell!"

Look at all the fun we had!
(Thanks Genevieve for letting me steal your slideshow!)

More pictures from the fun evening!

Amy and Jazzy have the cutest relationship. Amy chases her around the house. They even coordinate their clothing!
